The Hawaiian word for Coconut is Niu (nee-oo), and back in the day, Native Hawaiians used every part of the niu in their everyday lives. They drank fresh coconut water, enjoyed its fleshy meat, and used it to make milk or haupia (a traditional coconut milk-based Hawaiian dessert). But they didn’t stop with culinary pursuits - they also used coconut fronds for weaving, coconut husks for burning, coconut fibers for ropes, and empty coconut shells for musical instruments.
